Navigation Software and GPS

For our session before term break, Youth4Youth decided to focus on teaching the students at ESF South Island School about navigation software and GPS. We started the session with Snake on Google Maps, a rendition of the classic game Snake which allows players to navigate different cities around the world. We taught the students about GPS and its practical uses in real life as well as how satellite signals can be used to determine your position on GPS software.

Students then played GeoGuessr, a geography game which takes you around the world to challenge your ability to understand your surroundings. However, the main highlight of this session was teaching the students about GeoCaching. Youth4Youth split the class into teams of four and hid Apple AirTags around the ESF South Island School campus. The teams were challenged to find the AirTags as fast as possible using the Find My iPhone app on their phones. We ended the session with a Sporcle quiz on naming the countries in Asia. What an amazing way to show students the link between technology and geography!
